The operating principle of the electric convector
There are different types of electric heating radiators with different principles of operation. For example, infrared devices heat surrounding objects by direct flow of heat rays, and oil radiators – by heating the surrounding air. Convector heating works on the principle of natural air exchange – convection.
At the bottom of the device there are holes for cold air intake. Passing through hot thermal elements, it heats up and, in accordance with the laws of physics, rushes upwards. Hot air leaves the heating device through holes in the upper part of the case, and a new portion of cold air is sucked into its place from below. Thus, it circulates and heats the room.
Electric heating convectors have a fairly high specific efficiency compared to other types of heaters. For modern models, it can reach 90%, and heat transfer to the surrounding space begins already after 40-60 seconds from the moment the device is turned on. In this regard, only IR radiators can compete with them.
Another plus of convectors is that they do not burn oxygen in the room. Unlike the simplest electric heaters with an open filament, modern convectors are heated by closed low-temperature heating elements. Their average operating temperature is 60-70o C, which does not change the chemical composition of the air in the room.
What is an electric convector?
The question immediately arises: how can an electric convector heat a room if the temperature of the heating elements does not exceed 60-70 ° C? It’s all about the size of the heater: it is ten times larger in area than models with an open spiral. As a result, convector heating is in no way less efficient than oil or infrared heating. One device, depending on the power, can maintain a comfortable temperature in a room up to 30m2.
In the design of the convectors there is a thermostat to control the operation of the heating element. It is able to monitor the ambient temperature and, depending on this, change the voltage supplied to the heating element. This results in energy savings. When the set air temperature in the room is reached, the thermostat turns off the convector completely or switches it to energy-saving mode.
On budget models, a manual mechanical thermostat is usually installed, with an accuracy of setting the temperature up to 1 ° C. This is sufficient for ordinary residential or administrative buildings. Where finer adjustments are required, it is recommended to install electric convectors with electronic thermostats that allow the temperature to be set from 0.1 ° C. Maintaining such precise temperatures may be necessary in some pharmaceutical and food industries, in the poultry and livestock industry.
In addition to the automatic thermostat, each convector is equipped with a manual temperature switch. Standard devices have 2-3 heating elements that can work independently of each other. By connecting them simultaneously or separately, you can adjust the amount of heating of the device in manual mode. Another plus of the independent operation of several heating elements is that when one of them burns out, the heater does not fail, but simply loses part of its original power. After replacing the defective heating element, the convector continues to work at full capacity and provides full heat transfer.
Where can I install an electric convector?
Electric convectors differ not only in their operational and technical characteristics – in power, the area of the heated space, but also in the installation method. They can be placed:
- Stationary, on the walls.
- Mobile, in the form of portable floor heating.
- In the form of a “warm floor” system.
Wall convectors are often placed under windows and act as a thermal curtain. The cold air coming from the window is warmed up by a working heater before it enters the room directly. This achieves a greater effect of heat saving. Also, wall-mounted electric heaters can be mounted on blind walls, depending on the layout of the room and interior features. Convectors on the walls are full-fledged analogues of traditional water heating radiators.
Floor convectors are made in the form of lightweight portable devices. For ease of movement, they are equipped with wheels or legs. The advantage of such heaters is the ability to move them, if necessary, by installing them in the right place in the room. For example, they can be placed next to a sofa or armchair, creating a comfortable temperature environment right where the person is located.
Another modification of electric convectors concerns their installation under the floor. However, unlike water or foil underfloor heating, convectors are not located under the entire floor surface, but pointwise. Usually directly under the windows, at the door sill – the main sources of cold in the room. Such structures are recommended to be placed indoors:
- With large panoramic windows
- In children’s rooms where open installation of hot stoves is undesirable.
- In rooms where it is impossible to install wall radiators due to the peculiarities of the interior and layout.
- At the entrance doors, as a thermal curtain.
Electric heaters are installed in a special niche located under the floors. From above they are closed with grilles with slots or perforations, positioned so that cold air is drawn in from the side of windows or doors and warm air is supplied to the room. Built-in convectors differ in power and length, and you should choose them depending on the area of the room and the length of the window openings.
